"Developing a challenging speaking test"

Finding a practical way to assess the speaking speaking ability of students with varying proficiency can be a challenge, especially when standardised assessment is a requirement. An extension to a standard speaking test was developed for higher level students. It involved students developing the ability to express and debate opinions on a range of of topics, to supplement the basic topics provided in the standard test. In this presentation, I will outline the test and its benefits, the logistics of administering such a test within a 90-minute lesson with up to 30 students, as well as plans for future improvements.

"Done in 60 Seconds"

Geared towards teachers with beginner-level or reluctant students, this presentation focuses on the integration of brief but frequent bottom-up processing (BUP) activities into larger, more meaning-focused instruction. Twenty-four activities will be demonstrated, each of which serve to promote BUP skills, reinforce target language needed for more communicative tasks, and/or increase learner engagement.
