Kagoshima meeting 15 Mar: Specialised English at Art Universities in Japan

posted Feb 19, 2016, 4:31 PM by NanKyu JALT   [ updated Feb 22, 2016, 8:39 PM by Joseph Tomei ]
Date and Time:  Tuesday, 15 March 2016 - 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Speakers: Will Hall and Eric Luong
Venue: In the new AEON building 7th floor opposite Kagoshima Chuo station (map link)
In this talk we will outline the situation of English language education in specialist art universities in Japan. Throughout our university art studies in Kyoto, we both realised that the standard compulsory English education offered was not enough to meet the very specialised needs of the students, many of whom have hopes to be active abroad as exchange students at foreign art schools, or to take part in exhibitions or the increasingly popular artist residen
cies. We will pay particular attention to the art specific teaching methods and materials we have developed to meet the unique linguistic demands of our students, including:
  • Discussing artworks (both famous works and students’ own)
  • Deconstructing real artists interviews (written and video)
  • Artist CV and artist statement making workshops
We feel that this is an area yet to be thoroughly explored in EFL teaching and we hope to encourage lively discussion about how these methods may be used in other specialised (non-art) universities or classrooms and hear about other teachers’ experiences with content-based and specialised language education.
After the talk we will be going to recife for drinks and food. All are welcome, JALT members free, non-JALT members 500 yen. Hope to see you there. For more info, please contact Marcus Theobald at <>.
